The VM and the accompanying hands-on-labs are now updated to Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server 2015.  We have 26 hands-on-labs including 5 new titles, supplementing the 2015 VM that will help you get started with the ALM capabilities of Team Foundation Server 2015.

New Hands-on-Labs for Visual Studio ALM VM 2015:

Updated Hands-on-Labs for Visual Studio ALMVM 2015:

This virtual machine is configured with:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Evaluation
  • Microsoft Visual Studio Enterprise 2015
  • Microsoft Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2015
  • Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook)
  • Microsoft Visio Professional 2013
  • Microsoft Release Management for Visual Studio 2013 Update 3
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Standard

Using the virtual machine

There are quite a number of important instructions on how to use the VM including activating the VM, taking snapshots/check points, etc, documented in the “Working with the Visual Studio2015 ALM Virtual Machine.docx“.  Please read through the document prior to using the VM, even if you may have used the earlier version of the VM. The VM has about 15 GB of free hard disk space. Should you want to increase the size of the disk, you will need to do so before creating snapshots/check points. You can refer this article on TechNet for instructions on expanding the virtual hard disk.

Download the virtual machine

The size of the download is about 30 GB. Hence, It is recommended that you use Free download manager .  This utility provides:

  •  Auto-resume support for interrupted downloads.
  •  Multiple simultaneous download streams for (usually) a much faster download experience.
  • As the name implies, it’s completely free.

Steps to download and extract the VM

  1. Download and install Free download manager if you currently do not have one installed
  2. Copy the URLs  provided below, to the clipboard(using CTRL+C)
  3. Select File-Import-Import list of URLs from clipboard or press CTRL+SHIFT+V
  4. Specify a group or accept the default group to begin downloading
  5. When the download is complete, double-click the .exe file to self-extract the RAR files to a folder
  6. Read the “Working with the …” document to start using the VM

  1. I’m a bit confused, in the section where you specify how the VM is configured you specify ‘Visual Studio 2013 Update 3’ for TFS, IDE, and Release Management. Yet you’re using “Visual Studio 2015” as the title.

60GB is a lot to download to discover that the ‘2015 Update’ is not a typing error.

  2. The “This virtual machine is configured with” section appears to contain old information, could benefit from a second look.

    Great work otherwise! :-)

  3. This post is about TFS 2015 but, the “This virtual machine is configured with” section refers to TFS 2013 and VS2013. I assume that is just a typo or copy/paste issue from BK’s pervious blog post. Is my assumption correct?

    Dave Burnison

  4. Is there a type-o in the configuration section? (VS 2013? TFS 2013?)

This virtual machine is configured with:
    •Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Evaluation
    •Microsoft Visual Studio Ultimate 2013 Update 3
•Microsoft Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2013 Update 3

    • @David, No, unfortunately we couldn’t do it for this version. However like the past versions, you can always upload the VHD to your Azure subscription and spin off a new VM based on the image. We will also have it added to TechNet virtual labs soon where you can it try online without having to download the VM.

  5. Hello,
too many documents… somebody could suggest a path to follow to get better understanding about everything?
For example… don’t start with LAB B until you have completed LAB A. It could help us to take more profit from these amazing labs.

    • I belive that first is better to start with this question:
Is the learning path the order in which the documents appears in this article?

  6. Hi Sachin, Thank you very much for bringing up the VS 2015 virtual machine. It helps a lot to learn new exciting features of TFS and VS.

  7. Great blog you have here.. It’s difficult to find high-quality writing like yours nowadays.
I seriously appreciate individuals like you! Take care!!

  8. Fascinating blog! Is your theme custom made or
did you download it from somewhere? A design like yours with a few simple adjustements would really make my
blog jump out. Please let me know where you got
    your design. Thanks

  9. Hi Sachin. Good morning.

This Vm is a great tool. I have been following the hands on labs to learn the different features.

Yesterday, I was trying to restart the Vm, and it said the following error:

‘Visual Studio 2015 ALM’ failed to start.
Not enough memory in the system to start the virtual machine Visual Studio 2015 ALm.
Could not initialize memory: Ran out of memory (0x8007000E)

I have restarted my machine in HyperV many times, and still receiving the error. I tried reinstalling the VM. However after starting the Vm again, I get the same error.

Have you run into this issue? I am trying to figure out if I should reinstall Hyperv or the virtual machine again.

    Thank you again.

    • Hey Jag,

Were you able to solve the issue? This happens when you do not have enough memory to start the VM. You can try either closing other programs or reducing the amount of memory allocated to the VM in the settings page.

  10. Hey all, the Free Download Manager seems extremely dodgy to me and Windows has outright denied installing it. although I could override it, I’m not gonna because a)the site looks bad and b) never heard of this tool before. Can we not just the content in SharePoint or VSTS so that people can download it?

    • @Christos, thanks for the feedback. It is just a suggestion since it simplifies downloading in batch- you can use any other method/utility to download the files.

  11. I used to be recommended this web site by my cousin. I’m not sure whether
this post is published by him as nobody else know such
detailed about my difficulty. You happen to be wonderful!

  12. Great work! DO you have a build log for the ALM VM? I would like to build something similar for my team and wondering how you installed and configured the software.

  13. I was able to download you machine properly however I noticed that MTM is completely setup with all possible options. I was hoping that there would be at least some sort of information on the lab environments specifically on the setup of the controller and agent process. Even a complete example that I could reference would be beneficial to see.
